An excursion to the state of Uttarakhand
The BSG for SDG club of St. Joseph’s School North Point, in association with TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute)had organised an excursion to the state of Uttarakhand, with the goal of educating the youth on the importance of sustainable development .
The main objectives of the trip were to educate students about sustainable tourism and its benefits, explore and understand the importance of conserving natural resources, and most importantly, taking part in eco-friendly practices associated with rural sustainability.
The students camped at the TERI guest house in Mukteshwar, in an encampment notable for running on solar power and following strict water conservation practices.
The first major event which students had participated in observed an integrated hands-on approach in which members ventured into the rural farmlands and laboured with the farmers, learning of the practical issues and the eco-friendly solutions which had been implemented.
Students cooked and ate with the locals, observing traditions and exchanging cultural experiences, dissolving the barrier between the urban and rural.
The second major event which was observed was a trip to the Kumaonvani radio station, where students observed the methods in which the theoretical ambitions are turned into a reality through radio, with students even being taught on the technicalities of airing live and the reason for such measures.
The final event which took place in Mukteshwar was a trip throughout the town, this was organised in order to display the beauty of nature. the trip encompassed a passage to the Shiv temple, which overlooks the terraces of the Kumaon Hills, a forest trek to the Bhalugaad waterfall and finally a detour into an adventure park in which students and teachers took part in activities, ranging from rock climbing to archery.
On their way back to New Delhi, the students had the opportunity to indulge in boating across the beautiful Bhimtal Lake.
The journey ended with the group attending a short conference held at the TERI headquarters at India Habitat Centre, which aimed at dissimulating the mission of the seventeen sustainable development goals and the measures one may observe to ensure such goals bear fruits in reality.
